Oz was a guitar player in the band, Dingoes Ate My Baby, who perform at the Bronze on a regular basis. It was while playing at the Bronze that he first noted Willow, at that time dressed as an Eskimo as part of the cultural exchange program. From the first he was fascinated by this strange girl and his curiosity was only further aroused every other time he saw her. He was to be introduced to her at the school's career fair later that year. This was to be the beginning of a mutual attraction and eventually he asked out on a date shortly before Buffy's seventeenth birthday. Willow couldn't make the date because of the party but invited him to the party instead. Oz was to discover Sunnydale's secret when Buffy staked a vampire in front of him. Although his lack of emotion made it difficult to judge his reactions when he was given the full story, he did say it explained a few things. It was using Oz's van that Xander was able to secure the equipment needed to defeat the Judge. His life was to change further shortly afterwards when it was revealed that as a result of being bitten by his younger cousin, a werewolf, he was infected with the curse. It was around this time that he found out Nicole too livied in Sunnydale. Her being best friends with Willow and in love with Oz, they agreed to never mention their relationship to anyone so they wouldnt hurt Willow. The werewolf thing wasn't to affect his relationship with Willow as long as he spent three nights a month locked in his cage. The rest of his year passed quietly until Willow was placed in hospital as a result of the attack on the library during the Acathla affair. Then he was to aid her in performing the spell to restore Angel's soul.

Being the academic year above Willow, he was supposed to have graduated she entered her final year. For some inexplicable reason he failed his exams, thus being unable to graduate, and had to repeat his final year. During this time he became more involved the Slayerettes activities while still having to watch the phases of the moon... Once during a full moon a fellow student who, as a result of being jealous of anyone who was alone with his girlfriend for any length of time, could become something less than human attacked him. After Oz had fallen foul of this he was attacked but, as it was a full moon, had the ability to fight back with equal strength. His relationship with Willow was put in jeopardy when, together with Cordelia, he was to find Willow sharing a passionate moment with Xander. Unlike Cordelia however he managed to give the relationship another go and it was to bloom for the rest of the year, with a large step being taken shortly before graduation when they both realized how much they loved each other.

After his graduation, Oz joined Willow and Buffy at UC Sunnydale and was part of their psychology class. He was destined not to finish the year as he became attracted to the lead singer, Veruca, of a new band at the Bronze. The cause of this was discovered to be the bond that two alike creatures share and it was this that was to wreck his relationship with Willow when she found them together in his cage one morning. Veruca, in her desire not to have Willow coming between her and Oz, decided to go after Willow but was stopped by Oz. Following this, Oz decided to leave Sunnydale in an attempt to control the wolf within. He was to return close to the end of the year with the wolf seemingly under control in an attempt to patch up his relationship with Willow. This was not to be as Willow had found love with fellow student and witch, Tara. This discovery caused Oz to lose control of the wolf and attack Tara. He was captured at this point by the Initiative, a secret government agency dealing with all forms of demon life. He was freed from their cells by Buffy and Willow in an act that saw the defection of Riley Finn, Buffy's boyfriend, from government service. Knowing that he still had a lot of work to do, Oz left town again.
